those were the days….

since titling this post i have had the theme song for “all in the family stuck” in my head….. we used to watch the show and try to sing like edith bunker. here, you can check it out.

anyway…sissiebear and i got letters from my mom and dad in the mail this week filled with old pictures of us. they are SO fun to look back on! emma has some great ones posted on her blog here. and here are my little gems:

thank you mom and dad for sending these! it’s SO fun to look back…and by the way…. i CLEARLY remember thinking “i look AWESOME” in most of my clothing choices from childhood……….

when pauly and i started dating. fun fact: emma actually HATED him at this point. the fact that we are all on the couch smiling at the same time was the real captured moment here.

storming heaven

when i was little and newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, i remember talking with my grandma tracy about feeling scared and unsure about what this meant for my life…. i remember her saying that she was praying for me always, and more specifically she said to me “well leah, we will just storm the gates of heaven with our prayers for you.” that has stuck with me my whole life. the idea that we can flood the heavens with our prayers and, more importantly, that Jesus hears us. this is not to suggest that unless we bombard God with our prayers, He will not answer…but rather to say that it is an amazing feeling to know that so many people are praying for a specific cause and those prayers are flooding the heavens. i like that thought.

there are so many many things in life to always be in prayer about. good and bad, we (i at least) have a lot to talk with Jesus about on the daily. lately i have been in prayer over job situations for family members, health, house stuff (!!), adoption planning, etc..the list is endless of things to worry about, be anxious over, and otherwise want to control. i want  need to give these burdens over because they are not for me to carry. THANK YOU GOD. how amazing. how AMAZING that we serve a God who shows His love by carrying our burdens. and what PEACE that should bring. it doesn’t always, lets be honest, but it should. i also want to make sure i am praying with thankfulness, contentedness, and praise as often as i am asking for things……balance leah, it’s gotta be a balance.

our pastor talked a lot on sunday about what true peace should look like in our lives. it’s a great sermon and i won’t mutilate it by trying to recap, so here’s the link if you want to listen to it. actually it may be up tomorrow so you can just keep checking this link to see if it’s up. or listen to other sermons. they are great.

anyway, a while ago greg (pastor) told us about a woman he had been talking with after a sunday sermon. he said the woman told him that her son was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, and that he was very young. she went on to explain that one day she had taken her son out to the river to watch the boats and feed the ducks. as she was sitting there, she began to feel bad about how she was spending what could be these last few precious days with her son. she turned to him and said “if you could be doing anything in the world right now, what would you want to do?” she said he turned to her and smiled and said “this”.

i thought this was incredibly powerful. it was such a great reminder of appreciating the little things in life, being content with each day and happy to be living it. nothing is guaranteed in this life except Jesus’ unending love for us….but if one thing in life could be guaranteed, i’m glad it’s that.

i am writing this as a reminder for myself that i need to pray more. more often. more thankfully. more honest. for more people. to be in daily communication with Jesus. because He loves me, and i love Him.

kind of a hodge-podge of random thoughts, but hopefully encouraging nonetheless.

also, lately, there seem to be lots of heavy things that we are in prayer over. this song has really encouraged me.

the hunt is ON

okay i have been realllllllllllly bad at blogging consistently. BUT in my defense, we have been reaalllllllllllly busy lately.

things that have been (pronounced ‘bean’) happening:

1. house hunting

2. hunting for houses

3. meeting with realtors to discuss house hunting

4. going to…wait…i don’t want to be over dramatic…realistically…one BILLION open houses

5. talking about/thinking about/internetting/ otherwise being consumed by hunting for houses

so. yeah. that’s been a little bit overwhelming..

there are a lot of things happening in way of all things home for us. ie: our condo is being sold and we have 45 days from the time of selling to get the H out. OR we could find a house and then move when we want to. lots of think about.. but i do want to try to document this well because someday we will be sitting in our home and will love to look back at this and laugh at how inept we were at going about all of it….

it’s just so hard to decide what we want. no wait. the exact opposite of that, actually. i know exactly what i would want, but finding that in my price range is TOOOOOOOTALLY different. i told paul once that i would live with him anywhere, even in a cardboard box…….addendum: as long as that box had a nice kitchen with an island, a master bath, and 3 bedrooms with natural light.

in better, less stressful news:

we had friends over on friday and saturday and that was a blast. only took one picture, cuz i’m great at documenting my life, like a good blogger…..

also, we LOVE march madness in the plerg household. (ps.i’m a little nervous tubby smith is getting axed tomorrow……) so much fun and kinda makes me want to go back to college…basketball games. and i’ll have “the ball is tipped!” stuck in my head from now until at least june……

stay tuned for all things new house, and if anyone has ANY sort of advice about this situation or life in general, i am always open to it :)

the one pic taken of us. we may have had them over for a help-us -clean-out/eat-up-the- old- food-in-our -fridge-party. but it was fun :)

the one pic taken of us. we may have had them over for a help-us -clean-out/eat-up-the- old- food-in-our -fridge-party. but it was fun :)

consistency

i just got off the phone with my sister. we have the best conversations. she is so funny and our humor is so similar (yes, i am so funny too then by the transitive property…dang. math did come in handy today…huh….i actually don’t even know if that is math related….also. sometimes i think “why are you still typing this…”)

anyway. we were talking about working out/eating healthy and how to be better at it. we were both bemoaning our small workout rooms in our buildings (#firstworldproblems, i know..) and how we REFUSE to work out if anyone else is in there. i mean, honestly, there have been times when i have been on the treadmill for like…..literally 2 minutes….and someone else will come in and i will instantly think, “well, guess i only got a 2 minuter in today….cool down.” i just cannot handle the thought of someone else watching me workout. i think it’s because in my head, i run as if one of my legs were shorter than the other…..it’s not pretty and i do not wish to be silently judged by the skinny gym goer who would absolutely be mind-mocking me…..

we also talked about how we try any and all advice we hear or read…i have talked to running friends of mine about how they run and how i run and everyone is like “oh! your problem is you are running too slowly….” really? huh. that’s interesting… because when i run faster i feel not only like one leg is shorter than the other, but also that i am down to only one functional lung. so yeah. i think i am running at the right speed…..probably not. what the heck do i know…

also, emma was saying how she read this article today about 7 ways to sneak in extra workouts during your day. one of them was, and i am not kidding, brushing your teeth with your non dominant hand. so my first reaction is “(with sarcasm): oh yeah. that’s why my butt still jiggles…i have been brushing my teeth with my dominant hand like a fatty all these years!” but then my desperate side kicks in and i think…”well…..it won’t hurt to try it….” but then i get to teeth brushing time and i think…”ugh..i don’t have the energy for that tonight…..” but, then i feel fat for brushing with my dominant hand…..vicious cycle…

i think i am also the type of person who hates anything that is on my calendar to do, even if it is fun. so when i know that i have to workout after work, or before even, i instantly throw a tantrum in my head about it, and despise the thought of going to the gym…(and when i say “going to the gym” lets remind ourselves that i literally only have to go down 2 flights of INDOOR stairs..).. but really it could be anything, even really fun things on my schedule, but the mere fact that i “have to” do them, makes them seem like a chore….like “go to own birthday party..” and i think “ugh..i wish i could just stay in and watch downton abbey by myself….” so after all of this, we decided we both just need to be more consistent in our workouts/healthy eating….so. there you go. secrets revealed. feel free to brush with your dominant hand willy-nilly.

oh! funny school story: a coworker today was telling me that she was quizzing one of her students on her numbers and when she showed the girl the number 11 the little girl said “pause” LOL ……like the ‘pause’ button on a remote….only in america!

so this is just a small tangent blog about nothing really, but we were laughing about it all, so i hope it helps all of our tuesdays.

saw this on pinterest and thought it perfectly applied to my life at the moment:

every.day.

every.day.

an (almost) snow day

this weekend with my parents has been amazing. so relaxing and fun. it’s really fun as we get older and start to view our parents as friends more than just mom and dad. they are both so loving and supportive for pauly and i, and i am so incredibly thankful for them.

this weekend we got a call that our dear little condo is going to be put on the market… sniff..sniff…we have LOVED living here, and will miss miss MISS it when we leave……..(as i am typing this i am thinking to myself : “wait. did i already write about this?” i’m too lazy to click back and reread my older blogs so i will just type endlessly about this thought process instead.. and keep talking about it………)

so anyway we have started the process of house hunting. oy. vey. who the H knew this was so hard? no one warned me. i blame all of you.

we met with a realtor on friday morning and talked about price, location, style, fears… she was great. she has since been sending us all sorts of listings online and we have been tirelessly weeding through them, hoping to find “our” house. so far no luck.

but back to my parents: this house hunting has been TREMENDOUSLY better because they are here. they are so knowledgable on what to look for, what can be changed, what should be priorities…it’s been priceless information.

on saturday we drove around after the race looking at locations. then again on sunday checking out some open houses. man….it’s really hard to be from fargo and house hunt here. it’s just not even close to the same market, price wise. daaaaaaaaaang.

aside from house hunting we have also had lunch with great fargo/now minneapolis friends on sunday, hung out with cory, summ, ashur, tyson on saturday, and eaten out, just the 4 of us, a bunch. really could not have asked for a better weekend. sidenote: ashur and tyson LOVE my parents. it was melting my heart to hear ahsur call them suzie and “teevie boy” all weekend. love love love.

SO. last night fargo gets this HUGE blizzard and they close the interstate from alexandria to fargo. this means my parents get to stay snowed in for ANOTHER DAY!!  we got some snow too and it has been really windy…so…monday (today) paul worked from home, mom and dad stayed in and i danced happy and free in my first snow day of the year!………. not. ……….NOT!!! i had to work. boooo. hissssss. but they came and met me for lunch, so it was kinda okay.

anyway. there is much more to write about regarding all these big upcoming life changes. but for  now we just made pancakes and are going to watch the celtics game! (to be in my family you have to have an unhealthy OBSESSION with the boston celtics. they are the best team of all time. ever. period. back off.)

get lucky 7k!

this weekend my parents visited us! it has been HA-AMZING and we have loved every minute of it. lots more to blog about on that later, however i wanted to quick get some pics up of the race my dad and paul ran today! it was called the ‘get lucky 7k’ in downtown minneapolis. so. much. fun. it was FREEEEEEEEEEEEZING cold and i was SUUUUUUUPER glad i wasn’t running it, but it was really fun to watch and cheer them on! plus, it was perfect for people watching. one of my favorite things to do. lots of people dressed for st. patty’s day and ready to run! the race was really well done. bagpipers at the finish line, lots of fun irish music over the speakers, and really sweet medals for all the finishers.

also, my dad beat paul.because he’s a stud. i mean, paul’s a stud too, but there is a special daddy-o shaped spot in this little heart of mine just for him and i was really proud of him :)   so proud of both of them for finishing! whoop!

forgot to title this until now (a week later..) oops!

this week has been very interesting so far….

monday: was our cousin justin’s 30th birthday! whoop! most of my family sent video wishing him a happy bday and we got to talk with him on saturday when he watched all of them. justin married my cousin allie. she is one of my best friends and is just like a sister to me. so, when she told us she was bringing her boy-toy home for us to meet….we had high standards to say the least. but he was amazing and has been a perfect fit for allie and our family. so. happy birthday justin! (if he hadn’t been a good fit, i would not have wished him a h-b. just to be clear.) :)

also on monday we met with our landlord to discuss his plans to sell our loft…..(enter debbie downer music, here.) it’s officially going on the market on thursday and although pauly and i were planning to house hunt/move this summer…we are sad to say goodbye to this place. it has been more than perfect for us for the past 3 years and i’m sure i will have a big, long, sad goodbye blog to this place when we go. but. such is life.

tuesday: ms eleanor came to school with baby everett!! okay, to say my kiddos freaked out with excitement, is the understatement of the century. they were literally jumping up and down hugging each other, while screaming/laughing/ and i’m pretty sure crying with joy…… it was like i had just said “free puppies for everyone!” to a bunch of 1st graders. so awesome. we loved having them visit and can’t wait until she returns in may to teach again! so while she was here we asked the kiddos if they had any questions for ms. eleanor about the baby. so….this is 1st grade……the first question was this: “when i was born, i was WHITE in the face. and i didn’t breathe. but then i did and i turned pink.” which spiraled into “i had a club instead of a hand when i was born!” “my mom said i had a serious face when i was born!” “my dog thought i was actually a puppy and would growl at my mom when she tried to feed me!”
per usual, awesomeness ensues in my room. love love love. i took some pics of our class with the baby….but i don’t know if i can put them on my blog without parents permission…so just trust me, it’s cute.

also tuesday, i went with summer, ashur, and tyson to the mississippi market to grocery shop. can i just say, the staff there is SO friendly, especially to kids. each time we have gone someone has brought them apple slices, or juice and come over and said hi to us. it’s so nice!

i’m sure i am forgetting some things this week but that’s what i can remember so far. it’s been full and fun and this weekend my parents are coming!! i CANNOT wait!

staycation

what a full weekend! (sidenote: i am watching justin timberlake on SNL right now as i type this, so if any of it doesn’t make sense, that’s why. also: i love it when he hosts! hilarious. always.)

paul’s dad was here, getting back from a business trip to florida! lucky…… it was really nice to see him and catch up. we had dinner at one of our favorite mexican places here, las margaritas with all of our fam here in minneapolis. (that makes it sound like a ton of people, it was 6 of us…)… paul has a great family and i am really thankful to be a part of it.

also, this weekend friends of ours, josh kraakevik and hayley gowin, treated us to an amazing weekend at the W hotel in minneapolis. although they live in california, they wanted to spoil us from afar, and paid for a beautiful room for us to enjoy on saturday night. who does that??! amazing friends, that’s who. we felt so blessed and it was an amazing way to staycation ourselves. thanks guys! we love you! the W is amazingly beautiful and has such a fun atmosphere. (omg SNL update: i love the stefon skit during weekend update…LOL) anyway, we checked in, and headed downstairs to a great happy hour in the lounge called “the living room”. it was beautiful, had amazing appetizers, and paul tried his first manhattan. it was all delish.

that night we had dinner at the 112 eatery. ha-ma-zing. its a small little restaurant in downtown minneapolis with amazing food and super cozy atmosphere. we shared sea bass, razor clam salad, mussels, and pan roasted gnocchi with parmesan. yum. yum. yum. then we headed back to the hotel and danced the night away in the lounge that turns into an amazing club with a dj………hahahah just kidding! we went up to our room, ordered the most redonkulously delectable brownie from manny’s steakhouse (ironic, isn’t it?), and looked at houses online….in our matching hotel bathrobes….. we are old and boring. and i wouldn’t have it any other way.

today we spent some time lounging in bed at the hotel watching golf before heading home. this evening, we helped prepare a meal at the union gospel mission with our small group. this place is doing some incredible things here in the twin cities and we are honored to be able to participate with them.

later, our friends cory and summer came over with cory’s parent phil and dawn. they are so great and HUGE IU fans. we watched the game and the weekend was capped with an indiana win! whoop!

so much packed into 2 1/2 days!

………..not terribly excited about having to work tomorrow, but i am sure it will provide entertainment and fodder for this blog of mine.

happy sunday!

sNOw day

i left my computer at school for the past 2 days…whoops! so, obviously, no blog. but now i’m back! (thunderous applause).

here’s what’s been up:

so. tuesday was a snow day. not for MY school….but let me be clear: it WAS a snow day. it SHOULD have been a snow day for us. it was gross and wet and cold and STUPID out. and we still had to schelp ourselves to school. grrr. BUT pauly worked from home that day, so as i am stamping around the house before school….bemoaning my horrible luck….and really just throwing a royal fit….good-old-gold-hearted pauly turns to me and says “hey. i’ll drive you today so you don’t have to drive in this, and then i’ll pick you up for lunch as a no-snow-day treat.” WHAAAAA?? best. guy. ever. so…. i taught for a while, ate at punch pizza (the BEST pizza around, i think), and then worked a little more. pauly picked me up after school and it was so nice to just be able to relax on the drive home. let’s all just slow clap now for pauly, shall we? i mean. come on.

so wednesday i got a brazilian blow out in (on? for? to?) my hair. I. LOVE. THIS. it takes my hair from “uhhhhh…..what the heck…” to “ooooolala.” hair toss. hair toss. okay not really but i can wash it, let it air dry mostly, flat iron my bangs, and go. amazing. i go here. not for all my hair needs (man, high maintenance much??) but  they do this process for 1/2 the usual price and it’s worth every penny. so. yay me.

and. today i got to visit my little buddies, ashur and tyson for a while. it was great (see below). and also. school was hilarious, per usual.

below is an adorable story one of my kiddos wrote for our class. so creative. and such good handwriting. way better than mine, that’s for darn sure.

also here is an actual conversation i had with one of my kiddos:

me: hey T how’s it going?

T: (sigh) oh ms. leah. you’re one of those girls who says things like “totes” and “cray cray” aren’t you….

me: (blink. blink blink..) (for those of you who don’t know, totes=totally and cray cray= crazy. in valley girl world)

hahah! so anyway. this weekend is going to be fabulous and i can’t wait! so happy almost friday!

okay. is this not the cutest thing ever??

i mean. come on. SO creative!
