treehouse

on thursday night, pauly and i were invited to the ‘treehouse gala’. it was amazing on so many levels…..( i think i mentioned going to this in my previous post, under my “i hate my stupid glasses”-rant…) anyway, it was so beautifully done, and the organization is incredible. you can check out the work they do here, but just to give you a peek into their amazingness…their tag line is “loving at risk teens.” how cool is that? it is similar to the work at the union gospel mission does with it’s different programs, but treehouse is completely focused on at risk youth.

during the night, several students got up and shared how treehouse had changed their lives, but before they talked about the good in their lives now, they spoke about what circumstances brought them to treehouse to begin with. it broke.my.heart. drugs, absentee fathers or mothers, abuse of all kinds…etc…was the norm and every day life for most, if not all, of the teens at treehouse. they had no safe place to go, no safe person to talk to, nothing to rely on, no foundation to support them. treehouse gave them all these things and more, and did so through the awesome redemption of Jesus. these kids found family in each other, the mentors and staff, but most importantly, through the unconditional love of the ultimate foundation and forever safe place to land, Jesus.

there was a moment when they had all the current students of treehouse walk though the tables at the gala holding signs of where they had been, or where are they are now. some signs read, “headed to college” or “i have something to live for.” it was a moment i won’t quickly forget, and it was so humbling to be a part of it. to see real kids…to put a face with the struggle i know kids face, but have never really experienced first hand…it reminded me of the union gospel mission gal, in that, it made real to me the reality of others. how humbling.

okay okay…….. so that right there is a pretty great night, no? well. it gets better. how? i’m glad you asked. two words: JOSH. FREAKING. GROBAN. IN. PERSON.  okay five words. i DIED. went straight to heaven, and guess what? heaven sounds like josh groban. he was UNREAL. his voice! what?! who?! how?! ugh! amazing. just…..amazing. he ended the night for us at the gala and i recorded every glorious minute of him singing ‘you raise me up.’ yeah. get. jealous.

anyway, thank you treehouse for an amazing night, and for all the work you do in these teens lives. it really is inspiring. and thanks for josh groban. he’s heaven. in a microphone.

ready for the gala!

so we got our tickets through gallup, and these are some of pauly's coworkers we sat with. they. are. so. fun.

eye have a problem.

so. here’s a little story:

today i had an eye appointment. i wasn’t super excited about it, but it needed to be done. (oh, did i mention i had a dental appointment last night…this is how i am. i get it in my head that i need to make these appointments and then HAVE to make  all appointments for as freaking-soon-as-humanly-possible….it’s just how i roll..max-high mary…have we talked about this??….) anyway, so i go today for a routine exam and forget to bring my glasses. ‘well, no big deal’, i tell myself. ‘i’ll just pop my contacts back in my eyes before i go.’ great. …so…… i totally didn’t realize that they were going to dilate my pupils. OK. let’s talk about this: i, apparently, have NEVER had this done, or at least i don’t remember it. i didn’t realize that it makes your vision completely blurry for…oh….like a good 5 hours…..and that it basically renders your contact lenses more or less useless. yeah. no one told me. and, did i mention, i drove myself to the office. and i was supposed to meet a girlfriend for lunch afterwards…but that comes later….

so. i told the doctor that i have had some trouble with my lenses lately…….blurriness, itching…i was assuming it was allergies….so he examines them and tells me that i am NOT suffering from allergies, but rather have a DOUBLE EYE INFECTION. yeah. both eyes. infected. who knew. ..

..weird side note: i had this EXACT infection literally one year ago TO. THE. DAY. and i was SO bummed back then because we were invited to a gala for the following day, and i had to wear my stupid glasses to it. and so this year i was really excited to get dressed up and not have to wear my stupid glasses (can you tell i don’t like my glasses??…), but GUESS. FREAKING. WHAT?! i have to wear my stupid glasses AGAIN!!!!! what are the odds???!!! grrrr……i am so SO bummed!

okay so it gets better:  SO i tell my doctor that i don’t have my glasses to wear home and he’s like ‘oh no big deal. just pop your contacts back in and then put your glasses on when you get home.’ great. so i get up to leave and he hands me my check out sheet to give the girl at the counter before i leave, and my contacts to put in in the bathroom. so i take out, down the hall towards the bathroom….totally blind…contacts in one hand…check out sheet in the other…shoulder running along the wall for balance, and squinting like i am staring directly into the sun…  okay so i make it to the bathroom, eventually… and set my sheet of paper down on what i can only assume is the countertop. it’s not. it’s the toilet. the ACTUAL toilet. so i hunch by down by the seat (to get a closer look when, when i hear a faint ‘splash..’) in time to watch my check out sheet slip completely under the toilet water. so, (i utter a few ‘swears’, (as my preschoolers call them). , i’ll admit it..) i reach in and pull out the DRIPPING paper and set it on what i now know to be the counter. oy. okay so now to put in the contacts…

so i lean in, basically nose to the mirror, and put in my contacts. okay, and i’m really not sure how this is possible, but my vision is WORSE with my contacts in! i frantically grab my cell phone to text someone to come and get me, because at this point i am panicking that i cannot drive myself home and i’ll have to wait in the bathroom for hours until someone can come and get me. however when peering at my screen i discover that my iphone screen is COMPLETELY blurry. as if my eyes were smothered with vaseline, blurry. side effect of the dilation… so i just GUESS who i am texting and send out a few ‘help me!’ texts. not putting it together that even if someone DID text me back, i couldn’t read it anyway….so i take my contacts back out (because at this point i can see better withOUT them in..), grab my sopping wet paper, and shoulder my way down the hall, all the way to the reception desk. i can only imagine what i look like at this point: holding a sopping wet piece of paper by two fingers out in front of me, sliding along the wall so i don’t fall or trip, and alternating squinting and opening my eyes as wide as possible to try to see SOMETHING. ANYTHING in front of me. also my pupils are so dilated i look like a cartoon character. so ‘this’ arrives at the reception desk and i can’t really make out her face, but i say (limply) ‘here. i am a hot mess right now…sorry.’ and she bursts out laughing. no judgement. i would’ve too. she takes my sheet and i make my way back to the bathroom to try one more go at my contacts.

at this point,  enough time has passed that i can see out into the world with my contacts in, but my phone and all screens are still really, completely, blurry. so i decided to drive myself home. NOT a great idea, i know. but really my only option at this point…okay that’s not true either, but i was just so annoyed i wanted to get home…. so i had to try to call my friend and let her know i couldn’t make it to lunch. call paul to tell him i love him in case i didn’t make it home or got arrested…then drove home (in the SNOW/RAIN), took a short nap hoping to wake up and feel like a new girl. didn’t happen….*sigh….

so here i sit. as time goes on my vision gets progressively and markedly better. ….as seen by my ability to type and see this post…. thank GOD. but i do have to wear these suckers for a week and do 4 drops a day of antibiotics….and wear my glasses for our color run on saturday..i may need to get some science experiment goggles and a sweet strap to keep everything in place…….. so at least i will look awesome…….you KNOW there will be pics of that…something to look forward to..

so that’s my day. hopefully it was entertaining at least to you, so it wasn’t lived in vain. :) i’m sure i’ll laugh one day…probably while proof reading this..let’s be honest. it was pretty hysterical.

happy. freaking. wednesday everyone.

ps. our friends mike and molly came over tonight and that totally saved my day. they are great, and i will post more about that later. :)

oh, so my doctor said the infection was caused by my accu vue oasis contacts. he said they are HORRIBLE and he sees several people a week for the same infection. SO. just an FYI if you are having trouble like me.

tweet

okay, first of all….ugh…i joined twitter….i couldn’t even tell you what my handle (name? tag? idk..) is. i am following oprah, justin timberlake, and katy perry to name a few. why? WHY?! i don’t know…honestly…*sigh*…i don’t even know. peer pressure.

so…there’s that.

in other news! this weekend was PACKED but awesome. we did some house planning (well..more like dreaming…well..more like paul looking up things that will one day be helpful, such as, “hey do we want an outlet in our pantry?”…and i just give my opinion, “i have no clue..”)…we also got to babysit our super cute small group kiddos (no pictures bc i am a loser) and i made a BUTT LOAD of food. and that’s literal as well as figurative because it was all very good for you and therefore poop-inducing. just like it should be.

the cooking was inspired by the GREAT new blog i stumbled upon (via pinterest! see pauly!? there’s another reason i need to be scouring that sight at 1am! it feeds you, dang it!! you’re welcome!!) ….the blog is called my ‘my new roots’ and it.is. FAB. and a half. you can check it out here.  two of the three recipes i made this weekend are from this (tweaked of course :) ) i really can’t say enough good stuff about this blog and this girl sarah. she’s really inspiring and it got me back on the path of all things good for my bod. (insert angelic chorus: here.)

AND! our friend (who is really like family) danielle came into town for a WEEK WHOOP! and we can’t get enough of her! (no pics…again….see above ‘loser’ situation…) but she’s a hoot and a half and we just love her to reese’s pieces.

ready for another week??! yeah. me either. but at least it’s been AWE-SOME outside lately and we have a bunch of fun stuff coming up this week, so LET’S DO THIS!

shiitake mushroom stir fry. okay here's the thing: i don't even really like mushrooms and pauly usually HATES them, but this? THIS? this we could eat every day and probably will for a while. (on the my new roots blog!)

flash back

i meant to post about last weekend…well….last weekend, but that didn’t happen! oops! so here is a recap now…. because it’s worth talking about :)

paul’s parents and grandma grace came into town to celebrate (belatedly) both his dad’s and grandma’s birthdays. his grandma is 91 years old and still lives alone, drives around town, does (and finishes i might add) the daily crossword puzzle, and can still beat paul at cribbage. she’s incredible! and hilarious. i hope i have her….what’s the word….i-don’t-give-a-rip-what-anyone-thinks-of-me-or-what-i-say-ness, when i’m 91! example: paul made pancakes for us all on saturday morning…she apparently prefers hers thin and crepe like because when paul asked her how she liked them her reply was “well…they look done. but they sure don’t taste done.” hahahaha! i died.

we also took a drive out to our new home spot! it was so fun dreaming about what it will all look like and taking the fam through the model homes to show what ours will (sort of) look like. best part: here we are in this beautifully decorated and new model home with all sorts of windows and hardwood and countertops to look at, and GG(grandma grace) sits down on the couch (which i think is frowned upon at model homes, but she didn’t care..), grabs a throw pillow and (a little disgustedly) says (while peering at the stitching) ” huh, i could make that ..” and tosses it aside. hahahah!! and you know, she probably could too…

it was really nice celebrating last weekend with the whole fam, and we can’t wait to do it again soon!

oh! and she bought herself an IPAD for her 90th birthday. just because. she plays on it all the time!

last night we had the opportunity to attend a gala in honor of the union gospel mission here in saint paul. it was amazing. i do have to confess i wasn’t totally excited about driving across the city in our WINTER WEATHER (GAH!!!) but i am SO glad we went. the UGM helps men, women, and children who are in any form of need, to get what they are lacking, and most importantly meet Jesus. our small group serves a meal at the men’s campus once a month, so it was really great to see all the other volunteers and staff come together and learn about more ways we can serve.

the theme this year was ‘see more,’ and the testimonies and stories shared encouraged us all to see everyone differently; to see that there is more to each person than meets the eye. how powerful, really. it was such a great reminder that we are all deeply and thoroughly loved by Jesus, and no matter what has happened in our life, He is there to walk with us. we left really, truly, wanting to see people differently. wanting to make a difference, starting by the way we see others.

i was telling paul when we left that sometimes it’s easy for me to think of my life like a movie (where, of course, i am the star!). honestly, i often see homeless people as background characters in my life movie. they are there, i see them, but i don’t really think of them as ‘people.’ (yikes. that’s a little hard to admit….)…i don’t remember that they have a story to tell. they have a life, family, parents, children maybe, and that that life as ‘homeless, is their REAL life. that is REALLY how they live every single day. i need more compassion. more love. more generosity. i just really REALLY want to see people how Jesus does..

so, thank you UGM for all the amazing work you do in these families lives, and for the impact that has had on my life. please, check out all the great things they do on their website and consider how you can get involved! (if you live in the twin cities please know you are welcome to join our small group one sunday a month as we serve dinner at the men’s center! let me know if you are interested!)

at the end of the dinner, the speaker asked each table to create our own cardboard sign (like the ones we have all seen homeless people holding..) and send a message to those in need. here are the ones we came up with! also: love these people. love.

sunshine part 3

this post is all about food.  i NEEDED to have an entire post all about the food we enjoyed while in AZ, because there was just so much of it! we loved eating at all of our old favorites, and even tried out a new place per recommendations of friends. it was a total success all around, and we both returned to MN a little plumper to prove it!

okay so here is a list of the restaurants we visited. you can follow the links on each to read their full menus. below are some pics of food we are already missing. its a little sad that we miss certain food like long lost friends….but…..we do.

must try places if you are ever in the phoenix az area:

la grande orange…..phoenix, az

okay so this is half grocery store, half restaurant/gourmet deli, half cute trinket-y store, half pizza place. wait…too many halves……

the mission……old town, scottsdale, az

some of the BEST modern latin cuisine we have ever tasted. honestly it was so good we didn’t even take pictures we were inhaling too fast. we had table side guacamole, street roasted corn, ahi tuna tacos, and sangria….ugh…i can’t even……so good…..

true food kitchen……….biltmore fashion square, phoenix, az

this is an organic, ‘healthy food’ you could say, restaurant. but TRY IT. the food is SO fresh tasting. so filling and satisfying and makes you feel like you did something good for your body when you’re done. it’s like food exercising. which, in my book, counts the same as actual exercising….

chelsea’s kitchen……..phoenix, az

i don’t know what style this place is….but is ‘aweome’ a style?? they have fish, steaks, chicken, salads, tacos, pastas…it’s all good great. and their desserts are custom made by la grande orange….so much goodness coming together in one fantastic place. OH. and their patio is to die for! HUGE outdoor fireplace and string lights…so cute and comfortable.

menchie’s frozen yogurt ……….everywhere :) MN, AZ….

self serve frozen yogurt with any topping you could ever want. need i say more?

AZBBQ (aka sunshine part 2)

ahhhh….the AZBBQ. (arizona barbecue just fyi :) ) each year, our friends mike and rosalia logan (rosalia just passed her citizenship test! yay!) throw a giant crawfish boil bash in their backyard. originally from louisiana, mike sure knows how to boil up some delish seafood. (please don’t ask me to justify my vegetarianism at the moment…just go with it…)

the logans overnighted 200 POUNDS of crawfish straight from the bayou and boiled it up savory and fresh for any and all guests. served along side homemade cornbread, potatoes, corn on the cob, and handmade beignets with french pressed coffee….i mean…. COME. ON. delicious is not even close to describing this meal.

in addition to fabulous food, we enjoyed an afternoon in the sun, 3 different bands played, and we got to catch up with fellow t-birds..some of whom we hadn’t seen since graduation. it was pure bliss on every level.

here are just a few of the pics from that day. i’ll post more as friends send me their photos…

thank you mike and rosalia! it was a truly memorable day for all of our senses! :) this day reminded me of how thankful i am for our time at thunderbird. not only did it allow pauly to get a job he loves now, but we made some amazing friends, grew in our faith, and grew so much as a couple. — i do always feel a little…what’s the word…. under qualified?  to be hanging out with t-birds though…they are all business talk and growth and economics and i’m all ‘yeah… i mean..preschoolers…right?!….’ i try to nod along and say things like ‘ah yes….conference room B’…..but i think they are on to me :)

anyway…we hope to someday fly mike and rosalia up to MN in the summer and host a boil of our very own! everyone should experience this…

sunshine part 1

this last weekend (well…really last wednesday through monday) pauly and i went on a little adventure to visit some of our thunderbird friends and get some much needed vitamin D!! also, our cousin jillayne (whom we all affectionately call: ‘joleen’ ‘jillarious’ or (my favorite) ‘aunt chilada’), had some business there as well, so we got to stay for FREE at her hotel(and hang with her, of course, the best part!)!!! AND pauly discovered some frequent flier miles we had saved up, so our flights cost us a total of $10! whoop whoop!! free loading off the man! that’s my kind of vacation! at the hotel, we enjoyed free breakfast each morning, including an amazing omelette bar, pancakes, french toast, hash browns, and fruit…..delish. also an amazing pool to tan our pasty white minnesota flesh (minor sunburns for us both), and complementary happy hour where we stocked up on pita and hummus daily. oh did i mention i gained, meh…10 pounds give or take…yeah. worth it. best trip ever.

we had SO much fun catching up with old friends from t-bird, enjoying an AMAZING backyard bbq hosted by our friends(blog on that to follow), and eating at some of our favorite dinner spots! pauly golfed a bunch, which was just so good for his soul :), and we visited with friends from t-bird who just had an ADORABLE baby boy! (and they made us homemade pizzas, so we felt right at home!)

the only downside was our flight home. it was a literal sand storm all day in az (um…can you say allergies??!!), and when we got to airport we weren’t even sure if our flight would be able to leave. we did, and IT. WAS. AWFUL. it was the WORST turbulence paul or i had ever experienced. it felt like we were being sucked up fast into the air and then sucked down faster toward the earth. have you ever seen the movie ‘flight’? yeah. like that. tipping side to side…people were screaming during parts. i have never prayed so hard in my life……they couldn’t have beverage service until right before we landed……THEN when we got to “calmer air” (please note the GIANT air quotes around that), it started to lightening storm….seriously….lightening bolts flashing outside my window. FINALLY we pulled out of that and for the last 30 minutes it was fairly smooth sailing…THANK YOU JESUS for keeping up safe. i don’t, however, have ANY desire to fly again any time soon.

but, still. great trip.

so, on a happier note :) here is the start of pictures for this trip. LOTS more to come!

not sure who took this pic, but pauly LOVED being able to golf!

under pressure

i have had this song stuck in my head all day. thus the post title….i love queen…..anyway…i think i work best under pressure. as exemplified by my day today..i have-gloriously- had this entire day off. thank you Easter monday! i spent the morning with emma and dan before they left for fargo :( boo. they are so fun to hang with. and then i ran a few errands, but those errands were all stuff like buying new makeup which i LOVE to do, so it wasn’t really like errands at all… and then i decided to get myself a pedicure. because we are going to AZ on wednesday and also because…gross. it’s been too long. and let me just tell ya, it felt AMAZE-ING.

but then…i came home to my list of real ‘to-do’s’…..and i thought…i need to talk to some food about this… so i grabbed some (*cough cough* read: more than 2) pieces of leftover homemade pizza (pineapple. can’t get enough. thank you to ryan bro for the tip!) and thought about aaaaaalllllllll the things i need to do today. not the least of which is my new workout regime. but instead i just watched reruns of will and grace and ate pizza. i felt okay about it….until now…at 6pm when i’m like “ah! what! 6pm?! i have stuff to do! why did i eat that pizza? i need to workout! wait… what?! kim and khloe take over miami?! okay…..”

sigh…. so after this i am telling myself that i am cleaning, organizing my closet, working out, and going to bed early….we’ll see…..but back to the point..i think i work best if i feel totally under pressure to get something done. it’s just too easy to procrastinate when i have loads of time on my hands…

so… my master plan of working out. i have decided to start blogging about my consistency in hopes that that will motivate me to do it more (*ever). and here is what i am going to do (see below) …but i will be adding some weight training on non-running days. wish me luck! i think it’s totally reasonable to go from a lacks workout regime to 1/2 marathon training, right? ‘max-high mary.’ that’s what paul calls me. on or off. hot or cold. nothing in between!

lastly…pauly got invited to the wild hockey game tonight and i’m all “yeah! go! how fun for you!” and secretly i am outrageously jealous that i have to clean the toilets while he is there..oh wait…i had today off and got a pedicure…doesn’t matter..it’s still unfair because i’m the girl!!

first pedicure of the season! i am in a glossy/pinky hue sorta mood currently with my nail polish choices....

i have no intentions of ever running a 1/2 marathon..i just want to be in shape enough to run one if i wanted to...God help us all....mostly pauly...this could get ugly for him... i'm kinda a big old "B" the first few days of something new/hard in my life.
